How percentages work
What is a percentage?
A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. From the Latin per centum — "per hundred." Percentages are used everywhere: discounts, tax, interest rates, exam scores, and statistics.
Real-world examples
Discount: A $120 jacket is 30% off. 30% of 120 = 36. You pay $84.
Pay rise: Salary goes from $65,000 to $72,000. ((72,000−65,000)÷65,000)×100 = 10.77% increase.
Test score: 38 out of 50. (38÷50)×100 = 76%.
